授業内容
This course is a continuation of Japanese Law and Society I. (International Exchange students enrolling in the second semester may also take this course.) It is offered to students who are interested in Japan and for those who would like to develop a general understanding of the present characteristics of Japanese society and the law. The contents of the second semester will focus on private law related topics. It will be a combination of lectures and discussion. The first half will be comprised of lectures and students giving presentations on assigned readings. The second half will require students to form groups and to search for current legal issues of their particular "private law" interests to present in class and to promote discussion. This course will also require each student to submit a short paper on the topic presented in class.

The objective of this course (second semester) is to learn about the Japanese society and the law related to private law issues. Topics discussed will include but not limited to Japanese Family Law, Contract Law, Business Law and other current law issues.
Since this course will comprise of lectures, student presentations and discussions, another objective is to improve the student's communication and presentation skills as well as to improve skills in group work.
授業計画
A detailed outline of the course schedule and readings will be distributed to the students on the first day of class. Previous classes have covered the following topics:

1) Introduction to Japanese Society and the Rule of Law;
2) The Japanese Family and the Law;
3) Japanese Corporation Law;
4) Current Legal Issues in Japan 1;
5) Japanese Business and Contract Law;
6) Japanese Trademark Jurisprudence;
7) Current Legal Issues in Japan 2;
8) The Financial Crisis and Changes in the Banking Law;
9) Changing Aspects of the Employment System and the Law;
10) Private law related topics presented by students (1);
11) Private law related topics presented by students (2);
12) Private law related topics presented by students(3);
13) Possible visit to law-related facilities (1-Local Financial Institution);
14) Possible visit to law -related facilities (2-Local Attorney's Office);
15) Final discussion on Japanese Law and Society.

準備学習等の指示
Students are required to read the assigned materials each week (2 hours of reading outside of class-homework) and be prepared for in-class discussions of the scheduled topic.

定期試験の実施
Exams not done during regular exam period. 
成績評価の方法
Course grades will be evaluated by: 1) attendance/participation in discussion (30%); 2) presentations (40%); 3) final paper (30%).
Evaluations on the presentations will be given at the end of each session.

*Any student that misses a third of the classes (5) will be given a "0" for attendance and will not be allowed to submit the final paper.

Japanese students interested in taking the course must have the equivalent of the following English proficiency:
TOEIC 700+;
TOEFL 500+ (paper based).
