Japan's Bubble, Deflation, and Long-term Stagnation

This course is offered to students who are interested in Japanese economy or finance in general to
develop a general understanding of the present situation and characteristics of Japanese financial
systems. It consists mainly of lecture. At the end of each lecture, questions pertinent to the subject
at the time will be asked to check your level of understanding, and your answers will be reviewed at the beginning of the next lecture. At the last day of this course, what is the ideal financial system in Japan will be discussed.This course will also require each student to submit a short thesis on a specific topic of his/her choice from the topics discussed.
この授業は、日本経済あるいは金融全般について関心がある学生に対し、日本の金融システムの現状と特徴について基本的な理解を深めるものです。主として講義形式で行います。毎回授業の最後に、当日の講義内容を理解度をチェックするために課題を出し回答を求め、次週の授業の冒頭で各自の回答傾向や解答例などを解説します。最後の授業では、日本の金融システムのあるべき姿について議論します。この授業では、各回の講義内容のなかから自分でテーマを選定し作成したレポートの提出が求められます。なお、この授業では英語しか使用しません。

The objective of this course is to learn to explain about the basic mechanism of the Japanese financial system and what the recent issues about the system are and why.
日本の金融システムの基本的なメカニズムや、現行のシステムの問題点とそれがなぜ生じているかについて理解した内容を説明できるようになることを目標とします。

当日の配布資料は、事前にHUEナビ「授業資料」にPDFファイルを掲示しておきますので、30分以上かけて予習して下さい。また、当日配布されたパワーポイント資料をもとに30分以上復習して下さい。

a particular textbook will not be used. Materials will be distributed at the beginning of each lecture.

Exams not done during regular exam period.

The final grade will be calculated according to the following factors
1) attendance/participation in discussion (30%)
2) a paper on a subject on a specific topic of your choice throughout course (70%)
毎回の授業内容のなかから自由にテーマを選定して作成する1回のレポート（70%)と、出席状況や毎回与える課題に対する取り組み姿勢等で評価する受講態度等（30％）で総合的に評価します。

I used to work in the financial industry, such areas as corporate finance, securities business, foreign
exchange including derivatives, business planning (a liaison officer with financial authorities), and
economic research (especially on international monetary systems). I also used to work in New York,
London, and Hong Kong for a total of 13 years. In this course, I will draw on these experiences to
explain the current situation and issues in Japanese financial system from the perspective of both a
researcher and a practitioner.
金融業界で融資、証券、外国為替、経営企画（金融当局との折衝）、経済調査（特に国際通貨制度の調査）などの業務に従事した経験があり、また、国際金融市場であるニューヨーク、ロンドン、香港で計13年間の勤務経験があります。授業では、こうした経験を活かし、研究者と実務家の双方の視点から、日本の金融システムの現状や課題について解説します。
