授業内容
The content of the course will cover the theory and practice of Budo, and the various theories and practices behind each of the martial arts. Two experienced martial artists will teach the course and a number of sessions will be used for demonstrations and actual practice of Karate, Jodo and Kendo.

The aim of this course is to expand the interest and knowledge of the student in Japanese tradition and culture, especially on the subject of Budo.
授業計画
Content of Lectures:

1) Introduction of Budo and Japanese Martial Arts;
2) History and Philosophy of Karate / Choosing Readings;
3) History and Theory of Jodo;
4) Martial Art Weapons and Precepts;
5) Samurai Teachings
6) Karate Demonstration and Training;
7) Book reports / Kenjutsu and Tanjojutsu Demonstrations and Training;
8) Short Exam / Jodo and Iaido Demonstrations / Jodo Training
9) Who Were the Samurai: Swordsmanship, Ethics and Culture;
10) Readings and Discussion on the various Schools of Budo;
11) Readings and Discussion on The Book of Five Rings;
12) Nitobe Inazo: Modern Interpretations of Bushido and its Relation to Modern Society;
13) History, Theory and Philosophy of Judo and Kendo;
14) Short Exam / Demonstration and Training of Kendo;
15) Final Discussion and Summary of the Course.

準備学習等の指示
Students are expected to do the assigned readings each week (1-2 hours of readings) in order to participate in class discussions.
教科書
Text and material will be provided accordingly.
参考文献
Supplementary readings will be announced on the first day of class.
定期試験の実施
Exams not done during regular exam period. 
成績評価の方法
Grades will be evaluated by: 1) attendance/participation in class discussions (30%); 2) short exams given by each of the instructors (70%--1 @35%).
Feedback and evaluation of each exam will be given the following week.

*Any student that misses a third of the classes (5) will be given a "0" for attendance and will not be allowed to take the final exam.

Japanese students interested in taking the course must have the equivalent of the following English proficiency:

TOEIC 700+;
TOEFL 500+ (paper based).
