授業内容
This course will focus on Japanese style-management and theories behind it. It is a historical survey of Japanese business and covers various topics discussing its successes and failures. This course will be a combination of lectures, student presentations and discussions. The first half will be comprised of lectures and students giving presentations on assigned readings covering the theories behind Japanese style-management. The second half will invite several business executives, each from different local companies to lecture on aspects of the industry in general as well as on the specific issues of management and strategy of the company. A separate visit to each of the companies will also be arranged. This course will also require each student to submit a short paper on the content of his/her presentation.

The objective of this course is to learn about the theories written about Japanese style management and compare them with actual practice. The students will have several opportunities to visit companies and to talk to the executives of each company.
Since this course will require students to present on various topics and promote discussion among each other, another objective is to improve communication and presentation skills.
授業計画
A separate reading list and schedule for company visits will be provided at the first meeting. Previous classes have included (but not limited to) the following topics and issues:

1) Introduction to Japanese-style Management;
2) Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in Japan;
3) Advertising in Japan;
4) The Distribution System in Japan;
5) Total Quality Management;
6) Who Runs Japanese Business?
7) Women in the Workplace;
8) Doing Business with the Japanese: The Japanese Negotiator;
9) Case Study on Intercultural Organizational Communication in Japan;
10) Core Values of the Japanese Businessmen;
11) Knowledge Creation and Management;
12) Visit to local company 1 (Fresta Supermarket);
13) Visit to local company 2 (Asa Zoo);
14) Visit to local company 3 (Takaki Bakery);
15) Final discussion on Theory and Practice.

準備学習等の指示
Students will be required to read the assigned material each week (2 hours of readings) and be prepare for in-class discussion of the scheduled topic.

定期試験の実施
Exams not done during regular exam period. 
成績評価の方法
Course grades will be evaluated based on: 1) attendance/participation in discussions in class (30%); 2) presentations (40%); 3) final paper (30%).
Feedback and evaluations on the presentations will be given at the end of each session.

*Any student that misses a third of the classes (5) will be given a "0" for attendance and will not be allowed to submit the final paper.

Japanese students interested in taking the course must have an equivalent of the following English proficiency:
TOEIC 700+;
TOEFL 500+ (paper based).
