授業内容
The content of the course will cover the theory and practice of Budo, and the various theories and practices behind each of the martial arts. An experienced martial artist will teach the course and a number of sessions will be used for demonstrations and actual practice of Budo.

The aim of this course is to expand the interest and knowledge of the student in Japanese tradition and culture, especially on the subject of Budo.

Content of Lectures:

1) Course Introduction;
2) History and Philosophy of Karate / Choosing Readings;
3) History and Theory of Jodo;
4) Martial Art Weapons and Precepts;
5) Karate Demonstration and Training;
6) Book Reports / Jodo, Kusarigama, Kenjutsu and Jutte Demonstrations;
7) Short Exam 1 / Iaido & Tanjo Demonstrations / Jodo Training;
8) History and Theory of Judo;
9) History and Philosophy of Aikido;
10) History of Kendo;
11) Kendo Demonstration and Training;
12) The Samurai & Bushido;
13) Three Samurai Texts;
14) Religous Elements in Japanese Martial Arts;
15) Other Japanese Martial Arts / Short Exam 2

準備学習等の指示
Students are expected to do assigned readings each week (1-2 hours of readings).
教科書
None.
参考文献
Readings will be assigned in class.
定期試験の実施
Exams not done during regular exam period.
成績評価の方法
Grades will be evaluated by: 1) attendance/participation in class discussions (30%), and 2) two short exams (70%).
Feedback and evaluation of each exam will be given following the exam.

*Any student that misses a third of the classes (5) will be given a "0" for attendance and will not be allowed to take the final exam.

Japanese students interested in taking the course must have the equivalent of the following English proficiency:

TOEIC 700+;
TOEFL 500+ (paper based).
